Funeral Service Conducted for Young BrothersSCAMMON BAY, AK (July 9, 2007) – A funeral service is being conducted today for two young brothers who drowned Friday in the Kun River.Reaman Uttereyuk, 8, apparently slipped into the water, and his brother, Reichel, 10, apparently tried to save him, according to news reports. The parents, John and Carolyn, are active in the Scammon Bay Covenant Church. The Sunday morning church service was held at the Uttereyuk’s home at their request, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Standing behind the boys’ coffins, pastor Jon Cardwell told the gathering, "These two boys were like bread and butter. These two kids loved one another so much. They were very, very dear to me, and to many people here." Scammon Bay is a village of about 500 people, most of whom are Yup'ik Eskimos. Reaman’s body was found Friday caught in a fishing net. Cardwell wrote in a blog entry on Friday that "EMTs performed CPR for 45 minutes to no avail." On Saturday morning, search teams found Reichel’s body near the shoreline about 150 yards from where his brother was discovered, according to the Daily News. Neither of the boys knew how to swim. Although the village is near the water, most people don’t learn to swim because the water is too cold even in summer. The boys are survived by their parents and five siblings.
