KICY Returns to Russia NOME, AK (August 24, 2007) – Luda Kinok pushed a button at 11 p.m. Thursday and just like that, KICY-AM resumed broadcasting at 50,000 watts into the Russian Far East. Pushing the button was easy for Kinok, the radio station’s Russian program director, but that simple act culminated two years of work after a fire destroyed a tuning house for one of the station’s three towers. That tower and a second also had to be replaced over the summer because they had been in danger of falling. Construction was completed in July. Covenanters from throughout the denomination have helped with the work. KICY is operated by Arctic Broadcasting Association, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit, affiliated corporation of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Dennis Weidler, general manager, said the signal directional signal is equivalent to 200,000 watts because it does not travel in numerous directions. The station broadcasts music and teaching in the Russian language as well as English during a major portion of the day. For more information, see KICY www.kicy.org.
