‘Unity Concert’ to Benefit Sudan ProjectsCHICAGO, IL (September 21, 2007) – As many as 200 choir members and musicians from nine Evangelical Covenant Churches and the North Park University Gospel Choir will join together in a “unity concert” to benefit Covenant World Relief projects in Sudan. The free event is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oakdale Covenant Church. However, a freewill offering will be taken to benefit the Sudan projects. In addition to members of Oakdale, also participating in the event will be Naperville Covenant Church, Atonement Covenant Church, The Storehouse Covenant Church, Beverly Covenant Church, New Jerusalem Life Covenant Church, Community Covenant Church, Friends for Life Covenant Church, and new church plant Emmanuel Covenant Church. “It’s our desire to bless the people in Sudan and to work together,” says Emmanuel pastor Jocelyn Thornton, who proposed the idea. Thornton says she was inspired by a motion at this year’s Central Conference Annual Meeting that called for churches to be more intentional about doing combined ministry in multi-ethnic settings. Thornton, who is new to the denomination, says she has appreciated the support from other pastors in the area. “It has been a wonderful experience,” she says. Gospel singer Joyce Hurley will be the featured singer for the evening. For more information, contact Oakdale Covenant Church at 773-779-9440 or email Thornton.
