Sudanese School Escapes Serious Damage

BENTIU, SUDAN (September 24, 2007) – A school building under construction - thanks to more than $100,000 raised by teenagers at last year’s CHIC event - withstood the flooding that has devastated much of this African nation, says Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief.

School“The flooding washed away some of the sand and cement, but what was built stayed firm,” says Jim Sundholm.

Construction has been delayed due to the loss of the building materials, but Sundholm hopes work will resume soon. The accompanying photograph is from May and the most recent available. Since the time of the photograph and prior to the flooding, construction continued, including the addition the school’s roof.

Record flooding from torrential rains that began in June has left millions at risk for disease and uprooted thousands of families.

Covenant World Relief has established a special fund to help flood victims, with donations accepted by mail as well as online. To learn more, please see Sudan Flood Relief.
