Sundholm Suffers ‘Minor’ Stroke, Recovering Nicely
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 15, 2007) – Covenant World Relief Executive Director Jim Sundholm is resting comfortably at home following what he describes as a minor stroke early last Thursday morning.
“I am recovering very nicely,” Sundholm said this morning. “My concern is that when people hear the word stroke, they often think the worst. My doctor calls this a healthy man’s stroke,” he notes, as it has not inflicted long-term damage and provides an opportunity to complete further tests and determine what corrective actions may need to be taken.
 Sundholm was in Brainerd, Minnesota, on Tuesday last week for a portion of the fall ashram of the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church. He drove the two hours back to his home following the Tuesday evening worship service there.
Wednesday, he spent the day cutting down a tree at his home and splitting the logs.
“About five o’clock Thursday morning I woke up with a splitting headache,” Sundholm recalls. He found it difficult to maintain his balance while walking and felt numbness in one area of his face. When the situation did not improve, he went to the hospital where the condition was diagnosed.
Sundholm remained in the hospital for further testing and observation and was released to go home yesterday (Sunday).
“They want to determine what caused the episode,” Sundholm says, noting that the early tests show no obvious problems.
In the meantime, his travel has been restricted, including a trip to Sudan. “I’m getting my balance back and am doing very well,” Sundholm adds, also expressing his appreciation for all of his friends who have been holding him up in prayer.
