Old Hymns Get Makeover; Sunday Debut in Omaha

OMAHA, NE (January 11, 2008) - Putting new settings to traditional favorites always is a dicey proposition, but Dick Lindner says the 12 newly commissioned piano arrangements of Swedish hymns he will perform on Sunday at First Covenant Church won’t alarm anyone.

“I don’t think there is anything to offend traditionalists,” says Lindner, laughing. Rather, the arrangements by nationally known composer John Carter will give listeners a new appreciation for the tunes.

Some of the hymns included in the program are “Children of the Heavenly Father,” “Day by Day,” and “Thanks to God for My Redeemer.”

The congregation commissioned Carter as it celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2007, says Lindner, who is the church organist. Carter began the work in August and completed the music by Thanksgiving.

Lindner says he hopes the arrangements will be published so that they can be a resource for the denomination.

The program will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Attendees will sing each hymn and then hear the new setting. For more information, contact the church by calling 402-391-2747.
