Cross, Not Flames, Now Most Visible Image in Hooper BayHOOPER BAY, AK (January 25, 2008) - The flames that destroyed numerous buildings in this small village on August 4, 2006, could be seen for miles. Now it is the cross that sits atop the community’s new multipurpose facility that is easily visible.  Construction on the facility, which includes separate youth and worship centers, was completed in late December. Volunteers from Evangelical Covenant churches across the United States and Canada have traveled to Hooper Bay since the fire to help rebuild some of the 14 homes that were lost and to construct the new facility.Work on the multipurpose building was completed in December. Members of other organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse also have helped with the projects. The top photo shows workers celebrating the placement of the cross on top of the new multipurpose facility. The lower photo shows the worship center and handicap accessibility ramp. The village’s young people will operate a restaurant in the building. Students who have gone through a “Leaders for Life” program will work as servers and cooks. They received special instruction - their trainers are owners of Wendy’s restaurants who traveled from North Carolina.
