Miss America, Presidential Nominee Top January News Report
CHICAGO, IL (February 4, 2008) - Gary Walter was nominated to stand for election in June as president of the Evangelical Covenant Church, but it was the crowning of another Covenanter that attracted the largest number of readers of the denomination’s online news report during January.
Kirsten Haglund of Farmington Hills, Michigan, was named Miss America. Stories on her winning the title of Miss Michigan and the national title were two of the top three stories. Haglund is a member of Faith Covenant Church in Farmington Hills.
An article on a young artist who was recognized for her compassion also was widely read. The Topeka Capital-Journal named seven-year-old Emma Marten its Kansan of the Year. A benefit auction of Marten’s artwork raised $4,000 to benefit the people of Greensburg, Kansas – that community was nearly wiped out by a tornado last year.
