Quake Rocks Oaxaca; No Injuries Reported

OAXACA, MEXICO (February 12, 2008) - A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook southern Mexico today, but left no damage other than some frayed nerves.

“It lasted what seemed a long time, things rattled and shook, but there is no damage and we are all fine,” says JoEllen Reaves, a missionary with the Evangelical Covenant Church Department of World Mission.

There was only minor damage reported elsewhere and no casualties, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was felt hundreds of miles to the east.

“While we obviously knew there was an earthquake, we didn't know how big until (ironically) someone from the States sent us an e-mail,” wrote Reaves in her own email.

Four moderate earthquakes have struck the country since Saturday, including one just 25 miles south of today’s epicenter. Mexico is prone to earthquakes, especially along its Pacific coast.
