Rolling Hills Covenant to Present ‘Living Pageant’

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, CA (February 21, 2008) – Tickets are available for Rolling Hills Covenant Church’s annual production of the “Pageant of Our Lord,” which runs March 7 to 22.

The performance presents the life of Christ through "living" reproductions of famous works of art with people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original paintings and sculpture, as illustrated by the accompanying “The Baptism of Christ" living sculpture. The drama has been performed for more than 200,000 people since its inception in 1986. To see additional photos, visit Living Artwork.

ArtA 60-voice sanctuary choir and live orchestra add a musical backdrop to the production, which involves more than 350 volunteers who begin preparing for the event a year in advance.

Narrators provide historical insight into the artwork, as well as biblical context for the pieces depicted. At least one new art piece is introduced into each year’s pageant. This year’s addition is entitled “He is Risen,” by artist Greg Olsen.

David Halverson, producer and music director, was inspired by the “Pageant of the Masters” production in Laguna Beach and developed the Rolling Hills event. “The pageant is a year-round project,” Halverson said in a March 2005 Covenant Companion feature. “I have visited art museums in many countries of the world searching for art that would fit the theme of the pageant and that would be feasible to recreate in life-size dimensions.”

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. most nights, with several matinees also scheduled.

Tickets are $5 and $10 depending on seat location. They can be purchased through the event’s website, which also lists the complete schedule. Tickets also may be ordered by calling 310-521-2578 between 9 a.m. and noon on Wednesdays and Fridays.
