Craig Groeschel
NORMAN, OK (April 21, 2008) – Pastor of LifeChurch.tv in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Grew up in a United Methodist church. “We were believers in God, but not committed followers of Christ – there was no evidence of that in our lives, that Jesus was Lord of anything.”
Into the party life during college years, “and within a year it broke me. I sought God in a fraternity environment.” At one point the fraternity got into trouble with college officials, so a group of the fraternity brothers decided to start a Bible study as a public relations move, to smooth things over with the college. “We just read scripture and talked about it.”
“One by one, God started to pick us off. I got picked off in Ephesians 2 – it was in the middle of a ballfield where I just cried out for mercy and forgiveness. That party group evolved into a group of fanatics for Christ – it was a mini-revival.”
He visited a charismatic church – “it both scared me and intrigued me. They’d shoot people with the Holy Ghost gun! But, it taught me that faith was real and that people were committed to Christ. There was a hunger for the word. The United Methodist Bible study had a good teacher – evangelical – and I learned well. I served five years under that pastor’s leadership.”
He became friends with Paul Cunningham. “He asked me to fill in for him from time to time. That’s how I learned about the Covenant. We started LifeChurch.tv in 1996.”
