CWR Asks Churches to Use Hunger Crisis Bulletins

CHICAGO, IL (May 7, 2008) – Jim Sundholm, director of Covenant World Relief (CWR), is encouraging Evangelical Covenant churches over the coming weeks to download and use material published by Bread for the World as part of its recently launched campaign, “Recipe for Hope: Responding to the Hunger Crisis.”

Bread has produced the material in consultation with CWR and other anti-hunger organizations. The Covenant has partnered with the Christian organization for decades.

BreadThe bulletin inserts are designed to be used between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, which falls on June 17. A new insert will be available for each Sunday. To access the material, visit Bulletin Inserts.

The inserts offer two recipes:
    •    Recipe for Despair – information on the current crisis and its causes
    •    Recipe for Hope - specific actions individuals and churches can take

Sundholm says he understands the notice may be late for some churches, but hopes the congregations still will respond.  The material was produced following an annual meeting last week of a group comprised of interfaith anti-hunger leaders. Much of the conversation focused on the worldwide catastrophe and how religious bodies can help combat the problem.

The United Nations and other organizations say food shortages and hunger are the worst in decades. “Few people were expecting this to happen,” Sundholm says. “We knew food lines were getting longer, food shortages were getting greater, but everything suddenly caved in.”

Many reasons account for the worsening situation, Sundholm says. He adds that high fuel costs and the development of bio-fuels – which has cut the supply of grain for human consumption - have catapulted food prices to record highs in some areas.

Worsening hunger and food scarcity already have spawned deadly riots and strikes in a number of countries around the world, including Haiti.
