“A Taste of the Kingdom,” Feast Nourishes Participants
CHICAGO, IL (July 16, 2008) – Experiencing vibrant multiethnic worship at the Feast helped give members of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Des Moines, Iowa, a sense of what may be needed to reach their changing neighborhood, says pastor Steve Jones.
“It was done in a way that you felt like you were getting a taste of the kingdom,” Jones says.
He pointed to the closing worship service as a highlight. Walter Whitman, president and musical director of the much-acclaimed Soul Children of Chicago, led many attendees in the “One Voice” choir. “That night was huge for us,” Jones says.
Ten members from the congregation were among the 1,000 people who attended the Feast at Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin, June 21-24. In addition to worship services, attendees participated in workshops that ranged from developing a consistent prayer life to strengthening relationships with teenage daughters. Recreational activities, including hiking, tennis, golf, and arts and crafts, rounded out the full weekend.
After attending the last Feast three years ago, Diane Cline knew that they would attend this year’s event. However, she and her husband, Gary, who uses a wheelchair, became nervous due to last-minute changes in venue.
Rising lake waters forced the meeting tent to be moved to higher ground, and the couple worried about Gary’s ability to navigate the terrain. (See earlier news story on rising lake waters.) “But everyone rallied around, and it was great,” Diane says.
