Feet to Faith
HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS PUT FAITH IN ACTIONAt CHIC 2006 youth were invited to share their gifts with the people of
Bentiu, a village in central Sudan. The students collected more than
$100,000 to begin a food program, build a medical clinic, new school
and wages for teachers. This was a starting point. Then we began to ask
the question why? Why are their injustices in our world? Feet to Faith
is designed to help answer these questions. It is our strong desire to challenge youth to be followers of Jesus Christ, being a people who consistently live out both the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. Feet to Faith: Justice Ministry has come about as a response to this desire. In the summer of 2008 students from the North Pacific Conference will gather to explore and expose youth to injustices in their corner of the world. Students will be challenged to not only understand what is happening in the world, but to work to make changes in their local churches, schools and communities.
We want students to realize that God desires to use them where they are for such a time as this. They are indeed called to do justice, lover mercy and walk humbly with their God. Many students are not called to go across the world, but all are called to serve in whatever ways God can use them today. Feet to Faith will enable students to serve in the region where they live, seeing the injustices that are all around them, but to also see the many ways that their faith in action can have an impact around the world.
Feet to Faith is a pilot program of the Department of Christian Formation working in partnership with each conference to design a model that works in their context. The Northwest Conference has hosted a Mission Outreach Venture Experience (MOVE) for a number of years. Through the initiatives of CHIC 2009 each conference will be invited to dream and vision ways that we can impact our world and our community. Here is a little more information about what is going into the planning of Feet to Faith. Mission - To disciple our youth by exposing and exploring with them injustice in our world, specifically in the Pacific Northwest. Vision - That youth would walk where and with all whom Christ walked - in a beautifully created world with the hungry, sick, prisoners, homeless and aliens by showing compassion, mercy and justice. Goals -that students would begin to ponder what God is calling them to do as they gain a holistic view of Mathew 25: 14-46, to show students new ways that God can use them today and in their future wherever they live, and to encourage students to move beyond compassion and helping them to seek justice by asking the “why” questions.
