FAQs
How can I support Covenant Kids Congo now?
Pray. Hope. Act. You can support Covenant Kids Congo now through prayer for our brothers and sisters in Congo. You can show hope by hosting a Hope Event in your church, or if you already have, by encouraging others to host a Hope Event in their church. You can also show hope by gearing up for CKC: Phase II and preparing to host your 2013 Hope Event to give other congregants an opportunity to sponsor children. Finally, you can act by sponsoring a child and encouraging others to become child sponsors as well. Pray. Hope. Act.
What is a Hope Sunday?
Since October 1, 2012, Covenant congregations across the United States and Canada have been participating in Hope Events. These events present the great need in Congo along with providing an invitation for individuals and families to sponsor children through Covenant Kids Congo powered by World Vision. Currently, more than 300 churches have either had a Hope Event or have expressed interest in doing so, but we still need 100 more to reach our 400 church marker. Together, we have sponsored more than 5,000 children! Your congregation can sign up now to host a Hope Event and join this unprecedented partnership!
Will Covenant Kids Congo work like other World Vision sponsorships?
Yes! Individuals and families can sponsor a child who lives in the Equateur Province of DR Congo. As a sponsor you will participate in correspondence with the child. Monthly donations will be made in the name of the child but will contribute toward the greater community needs. Children, their families and the greater community will benefit from clean water, education, healthcare, food resources and economic development.
When can I sponsor a child through Covenant Kids Congo?
You can sponsor a child today by going online to CovenantKidsCongo.org. Child sponsorships for Equateur Province, where the ECC will be partnering with World Vision and the CEUM, are available. Sponsorship funds will be used to get transformational community development efforts underway. You can begin to sponsor a child at $40/month or $480/year, as we fuse our efforts to obliterate extreme poverty in the poorest coun- try in the world.
What is a Child Ambassador?
Child Ambassadors are appointed by their church to initiate opportunities to share Covenant Kids Congo information and the opportunity to sponsor children of Congo. These activities could include things like:
- Sharing one-on-one with your church members, friends, family, or co-workers
- Participate in Hope Sunday – a campaign in which volunteers share sponsorship with their church
- Participate in other campaigns throughout the year
- Set up Child Sponsorship Displays in your local church and/or present child sponsorship at home gatherings
- Prayerfully lift up your fellow volunteers and your own commitment to serve children in need; pray for your own walk with Christ
- Communicate information and data pertaining to your church’s participation with the ECC
Contact your church leadership if you are interested in becoming this valuable asset within your church community. If you are a church leader, it would be wise to choose people for this role, in an effort to develop CKC as a part of your church culture.
What makes Covenant Kids Congo different from other child sponsorship programs?
Covenant Kids Congo powered by World Vision is the first of its kind partnership between World Vision and any denomination. With the Covenant’s 75 years in Congo coupled with World Vision’s 30+ years, we will bring more expertise, relationships and over a century of experience, working with our friends on the ground, together to bring about sustainable community development. This child sponsorship program is about community transformation – and partnerships are key to this effort.
Why not give directly to the ECC or World Vision towards existing efforts in the Congo?
In this 75th year of life together in the Congo, we feel a particular call as a people to partner with the church in DR Congo. This coordinated effort will have a multiplying effect to achieve greater impact at scale towards overall community development in Equateur. Giving to the ECC, Paul Carlson Partnership, Covenant World Relied, and Women’s Ministries projects are all very important, and we support continued giving in those areas of ministry. Covenant Kids Congo is a monthly giving opportunity that we hope Covenanters will feel led to give to if they have not been giving to other serving globally initiatives or increase their giving by adding Covenant Kids Congo to the initiatives to which they already support.
What is the ECC’s and World Vision’s collective history in Congo?
The Evangelical Covenant Church and World Vision have collectively spent over a century working in support of Congo. In partnership with the Congolese, for 75 years, the ECC has supported the development of CEUM ministries and walked alongside our Congolese brothers and sisters in the creation of strong and vibrant church life that enriches communities in Equateur Province. Additionally, for decades World Vision has produced models that support community mapping and engages 98% of the indigenous population of the countries in which they have collaborated. Their ability to communicate with people on the ground as well as donors with relevant, timely, and transformative insights has caused them to be one of the world’s leaders in community support efforts. Together, the ECC and World Vision are taking the best they have to offer and committing it to a holistic journey to transformation for Congo as well as for us, the ECC.
