Leader Development

Sun shining behind crossFor a Christian leader character is paramount. From the wisdom of Mother Wardella Thompson (Community Covenant Church, Calumet Park, Illinois) we’ve learned a very important leadership principle.

“You can’t lead where you won’t go, and you can’t teach what you don’t know.”

We believe that the church will have difficulty growing spiritually beyond the maturity level of its leaders. As leaders, then, we need to take our Christian formation journey very seriously. We need to be intentionally cooperating with the Spirit in the forming of our character…so that we increasingly reflect the character of Christ.

A web post by Gordon Mac Donald offers food for thought.  Read 5 Crucial Questions.

A Story About Leadership

Which comes first…the goose…or the egg?Geese crossing a road
One day a countryman going to the nest of his goose found there an egg all yellow and glittering. When he took it up it was as heavy as lead and he was going to throw it away, because he thought a trick had been played upon him. But he took it home on second thoughts, and soon found to his delight that it was an egg of pure gold. Every morning the same thing occurred, and he soon became rich by selling his eggs.

Our point? If the goose signifies our character or “matters of the heart” and the golden egg signifies our competencies or skills, our premise is that the goose comes first.

The strategies that a leader employs are rooted in the person of the leader. A strong leader has a strong heart that produces strong results. By taking care of the goose, golden eggs will result.
