1990 Disenfranchisement
Resolution on Political Disenfranchisement
Adopted at the Covenant Annual Meeting, June,
1990
WHEREAS, the lordship of Christ extends to all persons of faith regardless
of race or ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, the community of faith draws people together as members of
one holy family; and
WHEREAS, the community of faith may serve as a model for all human societies;
now therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Evangelical Covenant Church oppose the treatment of
a race, or an ethnic group, or a populace within a society in a condescending
and demeaning manner, especially where the treatment permanently disenfranchises
a people, such as the policy of apartheid in South Africa, the disenfranchisement
of ethnic groups such as Native Americans, or Palestinians in Israel,
or the oppression of the democratic movement in China.
