Prayer Trail

Cedarbrook Church in Menomonie, WI recently completed a prayer trail that crosses a ridge on church-owned property behind the church facilities. The idea originated 10 years ago before Cedarbrook began meeting. A small group had been meeting with Pastor Remy Diederich, studying different ways that people can connect with God. The idea of connecting with God through nature dominated the conversations. Amazingly, 10 years later they have a church building, spare land and a prayer trail. Continue Reading »

“Underground River”

“Underground River” is our weekly prayer gathering at McMinnville Covenant Church. We meet on Tuesdays from 12-12:45 pm. The name of our gathering reflects its more contemplative nature. “Underground River” is a metaphor we use for prayer, acknowledging that our prayers (particularly in the evangelical tradition) often can contain a lot of words but don’t always genuinely reflect what’s going on deeper within. Underground River expresses the desire to connect our deeper desires with God’s Living Water, which flows deep within all of us like a River. Continue Reading »

The Door Is Open

For those of you who have traveled broadly, you may have discovered churches that are open each day for silent prayer and meditation. This was also true for the church down through the ages. The sanctuary was a place away from the bustle and noise of home and market – and a time to simply “be” with God. Continue Reading »

Merge: Intergenerational Prayer

At Sanctuary Covenant Church (Minneapolis, Minnesota), we are trying to incorporate ways for families and all ages to interact, pray, worship, and build community together. This idea came out of a desire to have a time for our children to be involved in our prayer ministry on Wednesday nights. It started as a central time to pray for our kids and the kids and schools in our city. This idea morphed and changed into a desire to bring our community together across ages to pray together in creative ways. We want to build a culture of prayer at our church, a space where all can pray together, and learn from the various styles of prayer. Continue Reading »

Good Friday Tenebrae: The Seven Deadly Sins

The seven candles that are extinguished in the Good Friday Tenebrae service can be fittingly paired to the seven deadly sins. Included in this service are calls to prayer, congregational prayers, and words of pardon for each of the seven deadly sins. Continue Reading »

Our Journey Together in Prayer

Each year we have provided a daily devotional resource for residents and staff at Covenant Village in Florida during Covenant Prayer Week in early January.  Most often we have used the Covenant’s Week of Prayer material (also available for download in large print). This year we decided to produce our own devotional booklet with each day’s reflection and prayer written by a different resident or employee from Covenant Village of Florida. Our theme was “Our Journey Together in Prayer.” Because the Covenant’s Week of Prayer material is non-dated, we may also use this resource at another time during the year. In the future, we could consider producing a similar daily devotional resource for residents and staff at some other time throughout the year. Continue Reading »

Week of Prayer from Lenexa, KS

Here is one approach to implementing a Week of Prayer focus in a church. They have used the Covenant’s 2012 Week of Prayer material (Selah: Pausing to Pray in a Rush Hour Life, by John E. Aho) as a guide at the beginning of the new year. However, this material (as well as resources prepared in previous years) is undated and may be used anytime throughout the year. To obtain the official Selah material, click here. Continue Reading »

GROWing Closer to God – Prayer Guide

Building any relationship into a healthier, more vital one requires time and patience. It is my prayer that you will experience a hunger and thirst for God, and will engage the disciplines for growing closer to God. Because out of the strength of that relationship we bring glory to God, and extend Christ’s kingdom. Continue Reading »

A Prayer for the Church (as a new year of ministry begins)

This past week in my quiet time I was praying for my congregation and resuming our ministries this fall. All of a sudden a series of couplets came to my mind, that speak to issues and concerns that we have here. I’ve written a prayer, based on these ideas, and made it for the whole church rather than singling out my congregation. See if any of it rings true for you in your situations! Continue Reading »
