Aging is a natural process that begins at birth and continues throughout life. The 65+ population grows at an exponential rate (10,000/day turning 65 since 2011 through the year 2029). As life expectancy increases, the range of ages and life stages in the encore generation expand. Every stage is a gift from God.
A follower of Jesus must prioritize growing as a disciple for one’s entire lifespan. The inner journey (growing deeper) manifests itself in an outward journey (further in mission). We are to pursue what the Lord requires, cited in Micah 6:8 – “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” We must also be aware that there are many in the encore generations that need to be introduced to and/or invited to follow Jesus. Evangelism is needed.
The Evangelical Covenant Church is seeking to ignite a renewed sense of purpose and vitality among encore congregants through CRESCENDO, a project of Make and Deepen Disciples. It is exploring ministries by, with, and for Boomers as well as revisioning current older adult ministries to develop a wholistic approach.
