If a person is working toward a permanent credential (ordination or
commissioning), he/she would apply for the Local Ministry
License. It is also the appropriate license for all individuals serving as
solo pastors who do not qualify for a permanent credential. It may be renewed
indefinitely, but the license holder must meet certain academic requirements
within eight years of initially receiving the license.
If a person is working toward ordination to word and
sacrament, and has completed fifty percent of an M.Div., he/she would apply for
the License for
Pastoral Office. This license may be renewed annually up to a maximum of
five years.
If a person is enrolled full-time in seminary and
he/she is also serving in a church as part of the degree program, a License for Theological
Students is appropriate.
Those who voluntarily serve on a church staff and are
not paid (or work part-time and are not prepared to meet the requirements for
the other licenses) may apply for a Lay Minister's
License.
Those who are called to be career missionaries apply for the License for Consecrated
Missionaries.
