Description of Credential
The World Mission License (WML) is for persons who are called to be project missionaries by the ECC. It is intended to provide credentials for those who do not qualify for ordination to word and sacrament, ordination to specialized ministry, or commissioning but are serving as ECC missionaries. This license is valid for the duration of the missionary’s call and authorizes the holder to perform appropriate functions, subject to government regulations. Who is eligible for
the credential?
The World Mission License is for
persons called as project missionaries in the ECC.
What are the
requirements of the credential?
- Membership in an ECC congregation.
- Participation in the ECC World Mission orientation program recommended by
the World Mission Committee of the Executive Board of the ECC and approved by
the Board of the Ordered Ministry.
- Submission of a completed minister’s profile form, signed baptism statement
and background check, criminal record screening, and statement of faith

Once the candidate meets the requirements for the credential, he/she
contacts the Department of World Mission for a license packet.

to sign the license application and check all boxes. He/she then sends all of
the paperwork back to the Department of World Mission.
- The Department of World Mission receives this paperwork, making sure
that none of it is incomplete or missing. If necessary, the department contacts
the candidate to inform him/her of what is missing.
- The World Mission Committee on Ministerial Standing interviews the candidate. The committee makes its recommendation.
- Once the candidate has received a faborable interview, the Department of World Mission may make copies of all license paperwork for its records, and then sends all originals to the Department of
the Ordered Ministry.
- At this time, the Department of the Ordered Ministry will issue an
interim license, which will be in effect until the candidate is approved at the
Covenant Annual Meeting. (Interim licenses expire on June 30.)
- To receive a first-time license, the candidate must receive a
favorable recommendation from the World Mission Committee of the Executive Board
of the ECC, approval of the Board of the Ordered Ministry, approval of the
Covenant Ministerium, and approval of the Covenant Annual Meeting.
- The Department of the Ordered Ministry sends out license certificates
in July. The license is in effect for the duration of the missionary's call (up to 5 years).
