Permanent Credentials
Following is a short description of permanent credentials in the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Ordination to Word and Sacrament (OWS) Those Ordained to Word and Sacrament are set apart with the
authority to preach and teach the Word, administer the sacraments and
rites of the church, and exercise pastoral care and leadership. Those
who seek this credential normally hold a master of divinity degree.
Ordination to Specialized Ministry (OSM)
Those Ordained to Specialized Ministry are called to serve in an area
of specialty, which includes being a leader in their area of specialty
to the local church and the Church at large. Those who seek this
credential normally hold a theological master's degree or a secular
master's degree with 30 semester hours of theological training. Transfer of Ordination
Pastors who are ordained in another denomination and who currently
serve a Covenant church or institution may be eligible for transfer of
ordination to the Evangelical Covenant Church. Commissioning
Commissioned Staff Minister (CSM) is an inclusive term referring to those
persons in the church who may be designated as specialists in adult
ministries, camping, children's ministries, Christian education (all
age levels), discipleship ministries, music ministries and youth
ministries. Commissioning requires some theological education. Those
with a bachelor’s degree may apply for commissioning. Consecrated Missionary (CM) Those who are Consecrated to Missionary Service are called to long-term missions work through the Department of World Mission of the ECC.
