South Sudan | Ethiopia
Covenant World Mission and Covenant World Relief are among those partnering with ministries in South Sudan. The Evangelical Covenant Church of South Sudan (ECCSS) has over three hundred churches with over 17,300 members found in South Sudan and in Ethiopia. The Republic of South Sudan became a new nation in July 2011. Please pray for peace to continue in the midst of uncertainty.
War has gone on in South Sudan for more than fifty years. More than 2.5 million people have died, and more than 4.5 million have fled their homes or the country. In 1994, refugees began arriving in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and some began attending the Covenant church. Soon the first Sudanese Covenant Church was organized, which then led to nine Sudanese Covenant churches in the United States. Word spread to South Sudan and other locations where there were Sudanese refugees in Africa, where Covenant churches were also planted. There are now more than three hundred churches that are part of the ECCSS.
