CHICAGO, IL (April 23, 2010) – Covenant World Relief funds are being used to help relief efforts in Qinghai Province, China, where a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred April 14, says Director Dave Husby.
World Relief International is distributing the funds among partners in China.
The confirmed death toll in the northwestern province has risen above 2,000. Rescue and relief efforts are being hampered because many workers are experiencing altitude sickness from working at 13,000 feet, according to news reports.
China observed a day of national mourning on Wednesday. Chinese flags flew at half-mast nationwide and at its embassies and consulates overseas as all newspaper editions were printed only in black and white. The Ministry of Culture ordered a halt to cinemas, musical and dance performances, the broadcast of cartoons, music and the operation of on-line games as well.
