Special Prayer Time Focuses on Community
HARRIS, MINNESOTA (February 10, 2006) - "I lift up my eyes to the hills –
where does my help come from . . . " (NIV)
Members of Harris Covenant Church began the denomination's 2006 Prayer
Week in late January by joining with members of other denominations for
a daylong event of prayer for their community.
The Saturday (January 27) event began with a gathering at Harris
Covenant for a time of repentance. The gathering then made its way up a
hill to the highest elevation point in the community. There, along with
individuals from other churches, the group drove a stake into the
ground, declaring that "Jesus Christ is the Lord of Harris, Minnesota,"
says pastor Neil Bonkoski.
Communion was celebrated, says Bonkoski, and "prayer was offered as the
group symbolically lifted the dark cap over Harris, asking God to cast
out evil and let his light shine through the city."
The group then divided into four groups, proceeding to the "city gates
to offer prayer for government buildings, businesses, churches, homes
and all entering or leaving Harris," Bonkoski says.
The group re-assembled at the Covenant church for a praise and worship
service. And, as must always happen when church people are involved,
"the day ended with a meal and worship," says Bonkoski
The event came together as the result of the work of a small group of
people in the community who began meeting a year ago to pray for the
city, mayor and City Council, says Bonkoski, who along with wife, Nancy,
were part of the organizing group.
